The New River Valley is a great place for a family vacation.  Recreation abounds. Hike the Appalachian Trails or the Cascades Waterfall Trail. Bike the 7 mile plus Huckleberry Trail.  Claytor Lake and the New River offer fishing, boating, canoeing and tubing. 

Golfers will love the numerous area golf courses. Wine lovers can visit the New River Valleys two newest wineries: Attimo and Beliveau Estate. Chateau Morrisette, Villa Appalachia, Valhalla, Amrheins, and the Fincastle Winery are other wineries within a one hour dirive of the Shires. 

Radford University and Virginia Tech campuses offer small museums and cultural events. Smithfield Plantation on the edge of the Virginia Tech campus is rich in local history.  

Antique Shops, an Amish community, Roanokes Center in the Square, and the unique town of Floyd, are just a few of the interesting places to visit during your day trip outings.

At the end of the day return to The Shires and enjoy the quiet privacy of the setting.
